Monthly Tire Check: Pressure, Tread, and Simple Care
Share
Tires are your car's only contact with the road, so a few minutes of attention each month pays off in safety, fuel economy, and tire life. You do not need special tools beyond a reliable pressure gauge.
Monthly Tire Check
- Pressure: check when the tires are cold, using the number on the driver door jamb sticker, not the number on the tire sidewall.
- Tread depth: use a tread depth gauge, or the penny test, to see whether the tread is wearing low.
- Sidewalls: look for cracks, bulges, or nails and other embedded objects.
- Wear pattern: uneven wear can point to alignment or inflation issues.
Seasonal Tips
- Pressure drops as temperatures fall, so recheck when the weather turns cold.
- Rotate tires about every six thousand to eight thousand miles, or as your manual suggests.
- Keep a spare tire checked and inflated too.
Keep Them Clean
Brake dust and road grime can build up on tires and wheels. A gentle cleaner and a soft brush keep rubber and wheels in good condition.
