Windshield Wipers: How to Clean Them and When to Replace Them
Share
Windshield wipers do their best work when they are clean and in good shape. When they start streaking, chattering, or leaving unwiped patches, it is usually a sign that they need attention rather than a major repair.
Signs Your Wipers Need Attention
- Streaks or smears across the glass.
- Squeaking or chattering as the blades move.
- Cracked, split, or hardened rubber.
- Areas of the windshield that the blade no longer clears.
Quick Cleaning Routine
- Lift the wiper arm away from the glass.
- Wipe the rubber edge with a cloth dampened with glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.
- Clean the windshield itself so dirt is not dragged across the blade.
- Lower the arm gently and test with washer fluid.
When to Replace
- Most blades last about six to twelve months, depending on climate and use.
- Replace them before winter and after a hot summer, when rubber wears fastest.
- Check your manual for the correct blade length for each side.
